Label feeders are bought for labels, then run everything on a roll. On flexible board and consumer electronics lines, the same station often has to feed FPC stiffeners, a length of Mylar tape, a piece of foam, or a dust mesh. They are all materials wound on a carrier, and all must reach the pick position within the same time window as the chip.
Two packages, one mechanism
A roll feeder takes two kinds of material: rolled paper tape and rolled adhesive tape. The material on the tape is the variable; the roll interface is not. A standard roll is 76.2 mm inner diameter, 200 mm outer diameter, with other sizes made to order; the peeling blade must open the carrier without pulling the part out of position. Labels, metal sheets, foam, and thermal pads go through the same hardware.
Rolled materials that are not labels
| Material | Role on the board | What the roll must match |
|---|---|---|
| FPC stiffener (stainless steel, FR-4, PI) | Flattens a local area of the flexible board for picking | Lies flat and bonded, no edge lift at the peel point |
| Mylar tape | Insulation and masking for flexible boards | Carrier tension, adhesive face orientation |
| Foam / barley paper | Cushioning and gap filling | Tape thickness, no compression before picking |
| Dust mesh | Vent holes and speaker openings | Mesh stays open, no shedding |
| High-temperature tape | Masking during solder pot and reflow | Clean peel, no adhesive residue |
These materials are exactly the range the feeder specification covers, and the reason the anti-stick platform comes in three surface treatments: Teflon coating, white silicone, red silicone. After peeling, the tape passes over the platform, and the surface treatment directly changes how adhesive-bearing material behaves near the blade.
Choose the model by material, not by label
The model size follows the widest tape, not the label mentioned at the start.
LFJUKI-100: for JUKI machine groups, covers 5~98 mm width, up to 12 lanes, 12 fiber sensors, body 640 × 135 × 160 mm, 7.5 kg.LFSID-100S: covers 5~98 mm, up to 8 lanes, body 450 × 135 × 320 mm, for non-standard fixtures and automation, left or right entry.LFSID-250S: width up to 248 mm, 14 lanes, body 570 × 380 × 410 mm, 20 kg, for wide stiffener tapes that do not fit a standard station.
Shared across the roll series: placement accuracy ±0.2 mm, angle accuracy ±0.5°, feed speed 1~100 adjustable, servo drive, fiber sensors plus touchscreen correction for position adjustment, DC 24 V.
One number to read separately from the label data: the feeder draws 80 mA average and 1 A peak, but the power supply must deliver more than 2 A. What affects the electrical cabinet is the supply figure, not the average current.
Why the material list keeps growing
Flexible circuit volume is the driving force. Public market research in 2026 put the FPC stiffener segment at 181.8 million USD in 2025 and gave growth judgments for the following years; in flexible board design literature, stiffener locations are discussed as a factor in placement offset for small-package devices. On the carrier side, carrier tape reels are described as the常规 feeding method for SMT components, with trays used only for parts that cannot be rolled.
On one feed station, the conclusion is direct: the variety of tapes on a flexible board line will grow over the machine’s service life, and a model bought for one label often ends up running three materials. The selection question is which tape sets the width and thickness upper limit at that station.
What to provide for a recommendation
The material and its carrier, tape width and length, thickness, number of lanes per row, and which machine or fixture the feeder will be mounted on. With these five items, the reply gives a specific model, not a candidate list.
The full series is on the label feeder model table, and one example of a standard body is the LFSID-100S page.
